Each year, on the third Thursday of April, Frisian speakers and learners come together on Twitter for Fryske Twitterdei.
This year, on the 18th April, Fryske Twitterdei was successfully trending with their hashtag #Frysk on Dutch Twitter feeds helping to promote the Frisian language while attracting a younger audience than traditional media outlets.
We learnt about this from Afûk at Celtic Neighbours’ An Tional, a Gathering on the Isle of Skye last week, and as a result we have the following announcement to make:
Starting on Thursday, 1st May 2014 and on the 1st June each year thereafter, Scotland shall have its very own Gaelic Twitter Day with the hashtag #Gaidhlig according to plans set out by Social Media Alba.
The aims are to create awareness of the Scottish Gaelic language by trending with hashtag #Gàidhlig on Gaelic Twitter Day; and to create an opportunity for Gaelic learners and speakers to join in in one great big conversation that will continue long into the future.
We’d like to work with different groups, organisations and individuals to make this happen. If you’re interested, or know of someone who may be, please get in touch.
